A Letter From Susan

I am extremely proud to announce that I am running for the New York State Senate, 2nd Senatorial District. I received an outpouring of requests from members of our community to enter the race, and I have answered the call. Having served the people of the Town of Huntington and Suffolk County for the last 20 years, I can’t sit on the sidelines while our rights are threatened on every front. I hope to serve the residents of the 2nd Senatorial District by being their zealous advocate in Albany, ensuring that they have the resources they need to live their best lives, the work opportunities they need to support their families and the environment they need to raise safe and healthy families.

We need reasonable and meaningful gun safety measures in order to keep our children safe and to keep deadly weapons out of the wrong hands. We must ensure that quality healthcare is available to everyone, that no woman is denied the right to make her own healthcare decisions and that no member of the LGBTQIA+ community is marginalized. We must protect the right to vote and ensure that every voter has unfettered access to the polls. We must combat hate crimes. We need to protect our environment, fight climate change, help our small businesses thrive and bring resources to our local community. I pledge to work tirelessly and effectively to accomplish these goals.

– Susan A. Berland

I am truly humbled to carry the endorsement of a number of key elected officials in Suffolk County.

The following are some of their affirmations of support:

“Susan Berland will make sure that Huntington and Smithtown continue to receive record school funding from New York State. She will protect our families by fighting for reasonable gun safety measures and she will be a champion to protect the reproductive rights of all women. We must elect her to the New York State Senate.”

– NYS Senator Jim Gaughran

“Legislator Susan Berland has always put her constituents first. Her experience at the local level of government, as a member of the Huntington Town Council and then as Majority Leader in the Suffolk County Legislature, is invaluable. She delivers on her promises for our taxpayers, our families and our entire community and in the New York State Senate, Legislator Berland will continue to build on her record of accomplishment and strong advocacy for our local Long Island priorities and our shared community values.”

– NYS Assemblyman Steve Stern

“I am excited that Susan has joined the race for the 2nd Senatorial District. I have been impressed with Susan’s energy, work ethic and effectiveness throughout her entire time in public office. She is smart, independent and passionate about doing what’s best for her
constituents.”

– Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer

“As both a town councilwoman and County Legislator, I have had the privilege of working closely with Susan Berland on a range of issues including expanding veterans services, protecting open space, and ensuring the safety of our resident. At a time when we’re facing some of the toughest challenges we’ve ever encountered, we need proven leaders like Susan in Albany who will deliver for our communities.”

– Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone

“I am happy to see that someone as knowledgeable, hardworking, and committed to public service as Susan Berland, enter this race. Susan has demonstrated these assets time and again as a fine Town Councilwoman and Suffolk County Legislator.”

– Town of Huntington Councilwoman Joan Cergol

“I am very excited that Legislator Susan Berland has entered the race. Having worked on the Town Board with Susan for 16 years, I know that the wealth of experience she brings from the town and county means that she can hit the ground running when she wins in November.”

– Mark Cuthbertson, Chairman of the Huntington Democratic Committee

“We couldn’t be prouder to have Legislator Berland as our candidate for senate. Susan is a proven leader and problem solver, and will get Smithtown the resources it deserves.”
